Labor, Delivery, and Postpartum Care
Treatments and Services
Comprehensive Pain Management
Patients have access to 24-hour anesthesia for epidurals and expert labor support for natural pain management.
Skin-to-Skin Contact
Skin-to-skin contact begins immediately after birth, promoting bonding, warmth, stable blood sugar, and easier breastfeeding. After delivery, you and your baby will move to a private room in the new Postpartum Unit.
Our highly trained staff will provide guidance on safe sleep practices and newborn care.
Newborn Care
All essential newborn screenings and vaccinations, including hepatitis B, metabolic screening, and hearing tests, will be done in the mother's room. The baby's first bath will be delayed for at least 12-24 hours to promote warmth and blood sugar stability.
Breastfeeding Support
The World Health Organization and UNICEF have certified BMC as a "Baby-Friendly" hospital because of its outstanding support for breastfeeding families. BMC's lactation consultants are available seven days a week and breastfeeding peer counselors offer help in Spanish and English.
First Pediatric Visit
Your baby's first check-up should be scheduled within three to five days of life. If you plan to visit BMC Pediatrics - Primary Care, call 617.414.5946 for an appointment.
